In response to the Iranian regime’s alleged use of their embassies to plot terror attacks against its political opponents across the continent, European nations are being called upon by the popular Iranian resistance group, the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), to shut down Tehran’s embassies.

While the Trump administration escalates sanctions against President Hassan Rouhani’s Islamic Republic, NCRI Deputy Director Alireza Jafarzadeh told reporters at a news conference in Washington, D.C., “What we are calling for is closing the Iranian regime’s embassies.” The Deputy Director added, “These diplomatic relations have allowed the regime to plot terrorist attacks and assassinations in the West.”

A Middle East security expert said that the approach of most Western nations towards the dangers posed by Iran and its proxies is inadequate, during a recent trip to Australia and New Zealand, and emphasised the need to contain Iran.

Dr Michael Doran, former senior director in the US National Security Council, said: “I think there are three steps. Number one, we need to reach a global consensus, or at least a consensus in the West, that the restrictions on the Iranian nuclear program have to be permanent.”

Hossein Salami's IRGC Appointment Is Not a Big Deal

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei appointed Hossein Salami as the new head of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) just days after the US designated the IRGC as a terror group.

Salami is often seen as a hardliner by the West, most notably for his mocking comments after taking US Marines hostage, and he certainly has characteristics and morals that are alien to all peace-loving people. However, it is important to note that no one in the Iranian Regime is a moderate and no one is a hardliner. They are all playing different parts of the same song with Khamenei as a conductor.

The US has given large exemptions to foreign governments, companies, and NGOs dealing with Iran's Revolutionary Guards (IRGC), according to three current and three former US officials, so they will not automatically face sanctions, even though Washington designated the IRGC as a foreign terrorist group last week.

The US has taken a tough stance on the Iranian Regime ever since Donald Trump came to power in 2017.

This can be seen in the US withdrawal from the Iran nuclear deal (Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action) in 2018 and subsequent reimbursement of sanctions, as well as this month’s decision to place the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) on the US State Department’s List of Foreign Terrorist Organisations (FTOs).
