Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, and Norway said in a joint statement on Thursday that the coordinated attack on four of their oil tankers just off the UAE coast in May was likely carried out by a state actor, according to the results of their preliminary investigation.

The three nations said that limpet mines – a type of naval mine that attach to their target with magnets – made large holes in the hulls of the four tankers on May 12, but did not result in extensive damage or oil spills.

National Security Advisor John Bolton threatened the Iranian regime during a trip to the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, just two days after President Donald Trump said the United States “wasn’t looking to hurt Iran at all.”

Speaking to reporters in Abu Dhabi, Bolton blamed Iran for an unsuccessful attack on the Saudi oil port of Yanbu and for planting bombs on four oil tankers off the UAE coast—without providing evidence to support his claims. The attack on Saudi Arabia was previously unknown.

Pictures showing Iranian paramilitary forces loading missiles onto boats are behind a recent sharp escalation in tensions between the US and Iran, The New York Times reported Thursday.

The May 3 overhead images show fully assembled missiles being loaded onto boats in the Persian Gulf, three officials told the Times, raising concerns that they could be used by Iranian Revolutionary Guards to target US Navy vessels.

A former Iranian commander has said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), in cooperation with Al Qaeda, deployed soldiers disguised as aid workers to Bosnia-Herzegovina during the 1990s conflict.

Said Qasemi, a now-retired spokesperson the IRGC, revealed that the IRGC forces dressed in Red Crescent uniforms to impersonate aid workers in order to train Muslim militias. Meanwhile, another IRGC official revealed that the IRGC and Al Queda engaged in joint weapons training.
