Anas Alabdah, who was elected president of the National Coalition of Syrian Revolution and Opposition Forces in March, said in an interview with the Saudi Al-Riyadh newspaper, that the Syrian people would eventually defeat Bashar al-Assad’s regime much as Libya's Gaddafi and Iran's Shah were abolished.
He also stressed the need for international help. He said that the global community attending Syrian peace talks in Geneva this week, should impose a cease-fire agreement to secure peace in the region.
Alabdah said: “The imposition of a comprehensive and real truce depends on how real the international pressure is to find a lasting solution which puts an end to the suffering of the Syrian people. The fact that the truce has been fragile since it was announced is attributed to the international community’s soft stance towards the Assad regime’s repeated violations.”
Due to previous truce violations, Alabdah believes that world leaders must also establish a punishment for breaking the agreement. This would hold Assad and his allies to account should they breach the truce.
He added: “There is also a need for alternative plans should the truce totally collapse. The Assad regime’s disregard for the truce has been encouraged by the fact that there are not currently a Plan B should the truce completely fail."
He said that the Syrian opposition has not gone to Geneva to start a dialogue with Assad or his regime; instead, they wish to achieve socio-political change through a political resolution.
He said: “While the Syrian opposition will not spare any effort and will take all possible paths to reach a solution in Syria, we insist that this solution must not be at the expense of the legitimate demands of the revolution or the enormous sacrifices of the Syrian people.”
